Murals
Temples are also the treasure houses of art forms like murals, a typical Kerala art form. Mural paintings are visual manifestation of the legends of gods and deities and demons. Popular among them are RAMA, KRISHNA, BHIMA, HANUMAN and NARASIMHAM.
PURANIC episodes of SIVA and VISHNU are depicted in these murals. SIVA THANDAVA is also a famous mural motif. PADMANABHA PURAM PALACE, and VADAKKUNNATHA Temple as well as the ETTUMANUR temple and TRIPRAYAR have magnificent panels of RAMAYANA characters. Many Kerala temples have murals dating back to the 16th and 17th century. Mural characters resemble KATHAKALI figures, again, depicting the RAMYANA and the MAHABHARATHA characters.
