The style and designs in architecture of buildings in Kerala have an unusual charm. Semi-circular or segmented arches over the doors, beautifully carved motifs, cast iron railings or bottle balusters of same buildings remind us about a distant past when the aristocracy flourished in full splendour. Traditional Kerala houses have a distinct style referred to as NALAKETTU (four sided) and ETTUKETTU (Eight Sided) based on a modular concept that allows the house to grow in geometrical progression. The four wings of a NALUKETTU house are built around an open courtyard with or without a covered VARANDAH on all four sides. The courtyard allows air and light to circulate and also provides for the rain.
